January 29, 2007 (cont'd)
While "The Mister" was napping I had a few phone calls from friends wishing me a happy birthday. One of my friends is having their birthday in just a few short days, and he told me what he had planned, and it was to go to Benihana's Restaurant.
It occured to me that my partner had never been to the restaurant, (I've been there several times including for my high school prom lol) so I looked up the nearest location and wrote down the instructions to get there. (Thanks for the idea, Tom!) I thought it would be a nice surprise for my honey if I kept the name and location of my birthday dinner a secret, and we'd both have a really good time. :)
One of the TV shows we watch is called "The Office" and just a few months ago for Christmas they had the funniest episode related to Benihana's Restaurant. It was so funny and wrong that it still comes up in our conversation topics this many months later. It didn't occur to me by picking this restaurant to have my birthday at, it would be too perfect for many, many reasons, namely some inside jokes we have related to that episode, and me having some Asian blood in me. (Mark my arm?)
We got to the restaurant and put our names on the waiting list. The wait was about a half an hour so we went into the bar/lounge and had a beer while we waited. I don't normally drink beer, by the way, but I thought, "what the heck, I'll do something different". We toasted my day and clinked our bottles. Towards the end of his beer he mentioned that he was "winning".
Did I just get 'served' with that competitive comment? Because when it comes to drinking I know he totally wouldn't want to go there with me. lol. About then we were called to be seated, (nice save!) paid for the drinks (as I slammed the last third of my beer down) and headed over to be seated at our table.
Let the f00d pr0n begin!
The waitress asked what we would like to drink and we both ordered up some more alcohol. I had a mango daiquiri, and he had a martini drink that for some reason looks like an apple one in the phot but it isn't.

The table was then served the first course of the meal which was a miso-type soup with mushrooms and green onion.

See how fast they move? Like ninjas! The service was decently fast considering how busy they were on a Monday night. The place was nearly packed!

The soup was terrific and really tasty! After the soup we had salads delivered.
One couple at our table was celebrating their wedding anniversary. They had their daughter with them. I'm guessing that it was in the range of their 25th to 30th year based on my perception of their age and their daughter's age. While the chef was preparing the third course of the meal (fried rice) he made a heart design with the rice for their anniversary as it fried on the hotplate.
The young lady sitting next to me congratulated me on my birthday and noticed that I was wearing a Disneyland button. She asked if I had gone there for my birthday and said, Disneyland and Benihanas on your birthday?! Wow what a good day!" My honey and I both smiled and he poked me in the ribs. lol. Yes it made for a very good day.
There are so many photos that I couldn't possibly put them all up to show you, except by doing a little mini collage below. Here you can see our salads and the chef cooking. In one photo I took a picture of another table that had a birthday celebration going on.
The both of us ordered the same thing which isn't what we usually do. Everything on the menu looked so good! Here the chef is cooking up a shrimp and vegetables appetizer. Or was it the sides for our meal? I lost track, there was just so much food!

I tell you, at this place there is so much food that keeps on coming, it seemed like there was going to be no end to it! My hand and fork became a shoveling machine working at a pretty good pace. For my birthday I was served a "pineapple boat". I'm mildly allergic to pineapple so I couldn't really eat it, but it was so nicely presented.

On the top right of the photo is a card. They had taken a polaroid picture of us and placed it in there as a memento which I thought was just awesome. My honey had a terrific time and so did I. He was very impressed with how the restaurant worked. He had never been there before, so it was quite a treat to watch him observing the chef provide some of the entertainment.
I was so full when we left the restaurant. I wanted to get home and just put my lounge clothes on and relax and then get to sleep! We got back to our humble abode and I changed into something comfy. By then it was after 11pm and I was soooo tired.
So here are the last of the photos from the day...

He says I still have a few more gifts with notes that are arriving, so I will not be able to decipher the message just yet, but I will post it here when I find out! After I opened my gifts I hit the hay. What a day it was! I'm so grateful to have had such a fantastic day that was packed full of fun and a lot of caring. :)
