My area was behind the white barrier on the left of this picture. Crews are setting up for the first race on Grand Prix Sunday here. By the grace of the universe, I was able to be a member of Race Management at this particular event this year!  As a member of Race Management, my assigned area was on pit row. Specifically, directly in front of the Winner's Circle. The general area was restricted to people who had credential badges.  I checked badges to either let people into my area or direct them to where they needed to go. (Such as photographers, press, etc.) To view the weekend itinerary of events click here.

Above the checkered flag where the two lanes split is where I was located. My section was located above the checkered flag exactly where the track splits into the pit lane. From the pit and in the winners circle I got to see the drivers and their cars VERY up close, as well as see the drivers of the Pro/Celebrity race. I was soooo excited!

I had to be at my assigned section by 6:30 am and worked until 6:00pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here are some pictures from Friday which was the practice day for the drivers. Most of the pictures that I took on Friday were during the Pro/Celebrity practice run.

In The Pit

Roll your mouse over the photos to view additional commentary.

The weather was especially cold since the event was practically right on the water. The back of my shirt says 'Race Management' on it! In the pit was the place to be! To my right in the picture is the gate to the winners circle. On my left is the track. In the pit, Mario Andretti came by and I was able to get his signature on my credential badge which is the yellow thing I am wearing around my neck. I was also able to have my picture taken with a couple of other drivers as well as get their signatures on my hat, and get great pictures of the action!

Most of the pit-side pictures I put in other sections since I took most of them during the pre-race, race, and post-race events.

They say the guy that got into the car was Vasser, but I don't believe it was so I didn't take a picture. I still don't think it was. This is a couple of the crew members pulling Jimmy Vasser's car to do media photographs. Jimmy Vasser is a member of Team Rahal.

Hi Drew. Congrats on your favorite guy winning the race! This is Drew.  (left) He is someone that I know from work that was also involved with Race Management. Behind the fence he is leaning on is the winner's circle. Drew is a Michael Andretti fan. He's wearing a Michael Andretti hat and got it signed by Michael while in the Winner's Circle after the CART event on Sunday. Congratulations!

We ate our lunch in the pit and were not allowed to have our backs turned to the track for safety reasons. We were supplied with water, soda, and plenty of candy. Willikers, this camera takes great photos! On breaks we were able to go into the car garage to view what the crew was doing to the cars to prepare for the race. We were also able to go into the Expo and do some souvenir shopping. They fired the engines up to check them before rolling them out onto the track.

Michael Andretti won the race that day. I believe it was his first win at Long Beach, unless I'm mistaken. I'm too lazy to look it up. Tony Kanaan's car went out on him and he ended up out of the race. That made me sad!!!

The weather was perfect for racing that day. The air was chilly and the sun wasn't blazing. The results for that day can be viewed by clicking here.

I don't have any pictures of the Trans-Am race except for what is in the section for the Victory Circle.

The drivers sat in the bed of the truck and waved to the fans as the trucks circled the track.

The drivers' parade cars lined up at my area of the pit.

Tony was sitting on the barrier waiting for the parade to start.

This is Tony Kanaan having his picture taken with me.

Tony had a conversation with one of the other drivers as they all waited.I think it's Paul Tracy, but I'm not positive.

Tony talking to another driver before they enter the parade cars.

around the left, after they make the right they come down the hairpin turn and head down the section I am located in.

The pace car (green, top) is about to lead them around the hairpin turn.

There were several yellow flags during this race.

They all follow at about 100mph.

The cars come in for their pit stops strategically.

Winner's Circle Pictures for this event coming soon!

Managing the Winner's Circle was quite interesting. There were people of all kinds trying to get in, and from what I understand, the pandemonium involved wasn't quite what it usually was, so either I was nice and intimidating, or the people were mellow. Me? Intimidating???? I'd like to think the people were more mellow.

YAY! I feel like a winner! This is me standing in the Winner's Circle on Friday, checking things out. Yep. I felt like a winner! Soon after the races, the drivers, their teammates, trophy presenters and trophy girls, would be standing up there spilling champagne and doing interviews.

For the CART race I was outside of the Circle handling the gate, so I was not able to get pictures.

However, from the Trans-Am race, I was able to get pictures of the winning moments of the drivers.

Victory/Winner's Circle

The car drives up and the media runs up to the car to film.

The car drives into the circle and is rushed by members of the media. Winner: Paul Gentilozzi.

Paul gives his teammate a congratulatory hug.

The events from the winners circle were done live this year.

After his interview here he stepped up to the podium for another interview.

The second place winner is being interviewed while the winner is interviewed elsewhere.

Second place winner gives his thoughts while the winner is also being interviewed.

First second and third place with trophies in hand!

The winners are presented their trophies and raise them for all to see.

They all spray the champagne on each other.

Champagne is sprayed everywhere!

More interviews after the presentation of the trophies.

...Then more interviews.

The driver was kind enough to sign my hat and get a picture.

The drivers were all very nice people and were happy to sign autographs and have pictures taken.

The winner was obviously in a good mood. He signed my hat and had his picture taken with me. The lady on the left walked into it. GRRR.

They were very patient and would sign autographs gladly for children!

The Car Expo

Here are some highlight pictures of the car expo. Great looking cars and great ideas on how to fix up my own car!!!! Many vendors and sponsors were there, as well as monster trucks. Wahoo!Viva la monster truck!!!

Vroooooooooommmmmm!!!!!!!

I have no fricken clue what kind of cars these were and if I were told I probably wouldn't remember.

This is one of the cars at the expo. Don't ask me what it was...

On the backside there was a view of the engine and some other parts.

This is a replica of one of the cars racing in the event.

I was never really fond of orange cars.

They also had vintage racers on show.

Memory tells me this one is called a Cobra. Who knows?

These cars were immaculate!

I got an autograph of the driver of Big Foot on a picture of Big Foot!

This is Shawn who worked Race Management with me standing in front of the legendary Big Foot!

I want a monster truck of my own!!!

I'm standing in front of a monster truck bigger than Big Foot. The tire is almost as tall as me!

At the expo some of the vendors were handing out free stuff.  I should be stocked up on Listermint breath mints for a good six months with all the samples I got from them.  Stagg Chili was giving samples, as well as Herdez, the salsa company, Red Baron pizza, a new tortilla chip company who's name escapes me at the moment, and I got some NHRA stickers. We visited the expo all three days that we were there. Shawn felt the need to go back for seconds when we visited the expo again on Sunday. The snacks really hit the spot!
